Super Handling All-Wheel Drive
The Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD®) system was designed primarily to enhance dry-weather handling, in addition to wet-weather stability. Dry-weather performance is improved through the system’s ability to send power to the outside rear wheel when cornering and even slightly over accelerate the outside wheel’s rotation, which helps the ZDX rotate itself into a turn. This action provides for much sharper cornering and turn-in response than is capable on conventional all-wheel drive systems.
Unlike most other all-wheel drive systems that wait for a wheel to slip before taking action, the ZDX’s Super Handling All-Wheel Drive uses a wide array of sensors to read a wide variety of vehicle conditions to continuously determine the optimal level of power distribution between the front and rear wheels, and between the rear wheels.
During steady cruising, the system will send up to 90% of available torque to the front wheels, helping improve fuel efficiency. During hard acceleration and/or cornering, up to 70% of effective torque can be sent to the rear, to improve acceleration and up to 100% of that rear-driven torque can be sent to either the left or right rear wheel, to plant the power where weight has shifted improving corning ability. SH-AWD is always on, and requires no driver input. You can monitor how the system distributes power though a display on the Multi-Information Display.
